When you’re diagnosed with a condition that can be treated with IV treatment, you may not know that there are alternatives to receiving that treatment in your doctor’s office. There are three main providers of infusion therapy: doctor’s offices or hospitals, in-home IV therapy, and infusion suites like Infusion Express. Read on for the pros and cons of each.
Option 1: IV Therapy at Your Doctor’s Office
A typical infusion can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours. If you’ve been diagnosed with a chronic disease, you might be a little tired of spending time in your doctor’s office, no matter how current he or she keeps the magazines. Depending on the level of staffing and emphasis on personal care at your office, you may or may not receive much personal attention during your IV treatment, simply because the doctors and nurses at your office may be busy taking care of other people with other problems.
The benefit to receiving IV therapy at your doctor’s office is that you probably already know at least some of the staff, and that can be a comfort especially during those first few treatments.
Option 2: In-Home IV Therapy
An alternative to receiving therapy at your doctor’s office is to have an IV specialist come out to your house so you can receive IV therapy in the comfort of your own home. For anyone who is tired of doctor’s visits, this can seem like a very welcome option. You’ll receive personalized, one-on-one care during your treatment since it’s just you and the IV specialist.
There are a few downsides to in-home treatment, though. If you suffer from what we call “Cleaning for the Cleaning Lady Syndrome,” you might spend your time and energy cleaning up before the infusion specialist arrives. And if you’re a private person, having a stranger spend 1-4 hours in your home with you might feel awkward or intrusive. Some people have wonderful experiences and are great candidates for in-home therapy, but these cons are something to be aware of.
Option 3: Infusion Suites
Infusion suites are essentially a hybrid between doctor’s office care and home care. You’ll travel to an infusion suite where you receive personal care in an atmosphere that, in most cases, feels warmer than a doctor’s office, and you don’t have the pressure of feeling like you have to host or entertain your specialist. The cons of infusion suites can be limited hours and limited locations.
