If you feel tired or sluggish, struggle with low moods, or find yourself getting sick often, you might be low on Vitamin D. A 2014 study found that, even though Vitamin D testing is much more common now, up to a third of men and 40 percent of women were Vitamin D deficient. So why is Vitamin D so important? Keep reading.
What Does Vitamin D Do?
Vitamin D is responsible for helping your body use calcium. You could be a dairy fiend, downing a gallon of milk a day, but if you’re not getting enough Vitamin D, all that calcium will be useless. (Luckily, most milk comes fortified with Vitamin D.)
What Happens If I Don’t Get Enough?
Having chronically low Vitamin D levels can lead to osteporosis, and many studies have shown correlations between Vitamin D deficiency and heart disease, Alzheimers and dementia, and some forms of cancer.
What Are Some of the Benefits of Vitamin D?
Getting enough Vitamin D strengthens your bones and your teeth, reduces your risk of some cancers, lowers blood pressure, and helps regulate the immune system.
How Much Vitamin D Do I Need?
There’s little risk of getting too much from natural sources like food or sunlight. If you’re taking a supplement, The Institute of Medicine’s recommendation is to take 4,000 IU/day or less, but talk to your healthcare provider first. Depending on your situation, you may need less than that, and there may be some indications where more is prescribed.
How Do I Get Vitamin D?
You can get Vitamin D naturally from sunlight. Just ten to 30 minutes a day (depending on the time of year and the time of day) is enough to give you the Vitamin D you need. You can also get it from foods like fortified milk, salmon, mushrooms, tuna and eggs.
