Summer is one of the most popular times for travel. With kids are out of school, weather is warm, and there are lots of fun activities happening all across the country, it’s no wonder summer travel is a great American tradition.
That being said, stepping outside of your normal routine and traveling with a chronic illness can present some challenges. Read on for some strategies to help you enjoy your summer vacation, no matter where you’re going.
#1: Keep Temperature Sensitivities in Mind
If you know you’re sensitive to either heat or cold, then take precautions to avoid temperature-related flare-ups. For beach trips, test sunscreens to make sure they won’t cause a rash, or take a fan to keep cool and dry. If you’re sensitive to cold air conditioning, take layers that you can easily add or remove. Plan activities with your sensitivities in mind.
#2: Plan Bathroom Stops for Summer Travel
If you have GI-related flare-ups, make sure you plan plenty of bathroom stops if you’re driving long distances. Plan your summer travel route ahead of time, and consider downloading an app to find clean bathrooms along the way.
#3: Don’t Neglect Your Health Needs During Summer Travel
If you take medications, make sure you have enough to last you through your summer travel. Even better, get copies of your prescriptions in case you need to have them filled while you’re away from home. If you need other treatments, like IV infusions, work with your healthcare provider to adjust your treatment schedule if necessary.
#4: Know Your Limits
You likely know what your body can handle and what it can’t. Don’t be afraid to sit out some activities or to suggest some other ones that work better for you. Schedule time in just for you to relax the way you need to.
