Firing up the barbecue grill, potlucking, and cracking open some ice-cold beers is almost as American as the Fourth of July itself. Don’t let your inflammatory bowel disease symptoms ruin your holiday. Use our tips to enjoy celebrating Independence Day with your friends — and with IBD.
#1: Know Your Triggers
If you’ve been keeping a food journal and tracking your symptoms, you already know what foods and drinks you need to avoid. A Fourth of July celebration is no different. Some people with IBD have no trouble with alcohol, while others pay a heavy price. Pay attention to what’s worked before — and what hasn’t.
#2: Bring an IBD-Friendly Dish
If you’re hosting friends and/or family for the Fourth of July, this one’s easy, since you have complete control over the menu. If you’re attending someone else’s party, give them a holler and ask if you can bring a dish. You don’t need to go into all the details of your condition if you’re not comfortable. You can simply mention you’re on a medical diet and offer to bring something both delicious and compatible with your dietary needs.
#3: Pay Careful Attention to Sauces and Dressings
It’s hard to know what exactly is included in the ingredient list of sauces or dressings. That barbecue sauce may contain irritating spices, and that dessert could have a sugar substitute instead of the real thing. You can always ask to see a nutrition label or ask about what was used in a dish, but when in doubt, it’s never a bad idea to stick to fruit salad or other undressed meats and veggies.
#4: Start Small
Overeating definitely won’t help your symptoms, so stick to small portions, and stay hydrated. If you do indulge in alcohol, keep it to one or two glasses at most, alternating with water. Alcohol can lower your inhibitions, which could lead to you eating too much food or neglecting to avoid foods you know you shouldn’t have.
#5: Have Fun
Remember, the point of these get-togethers is having a blast with your friends and family. Don’t feel bad for avoiding food, or even bringing your own IBD-friendly meal. Chat it up, play games, and enjoy the fireworks — you’ll be guaranteed to have a great Fourth of July.
