“You need to listen to your body.” It’s advice you’ve probably heard time and again, especially if you have a chronic illness. But what does “listening to your body” actually mean? It’s not as if some part of us other than our mouths is going to start talking and telling us what it needs.
Luckily, there are other tools besides our ears we can use to heed the signals are body is sending. Read on to find out more.
Listening to your body by practicing Mindfulness
The term “mindfulness” might be as vague as “listen to your body,” but the concept itself is simple, if not easy.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness, in short, is bringing your focus back to the present moment instead of dwelling about what’s happened in the past or worrying about what’s going to happen in the future.
A beginner’s exercise
Not sure where to start? Try sitting or lying down and closing your eyes. Focus on each part of your body and their sensations: your feet, you legs, your torso, your arms, your back, your shoulders, your neck, your head, and your breath.
Listen and take action
This is an example of mindfully experiencing a moment, and it can help you relax parts of your body that are tense (didn’t realize your shoulders were tensed up to your ears?) and notice places of discomfort you might have been ignoring.
Knowing where your body needs help allows you to take action — whether it’s stretching, exercising, resting, making the association between a dietary or environmental trigger, or remembering to take medication. Learning how to practice mindfulness and listen to your body can work wonders when it comes to managing your chronic illness.
