Vacation is often our opportunity to break away from routine, but if you have a chronic illness, you likely know that routine is what helps you prevent flare-ups and manage your symptoms effectively.
But having a chronic illness doesn’t mean you have to give up having adventures. With a few strategies, you can enjoy a vacation, even with a chronic illness.
Take Inventory of Your Health Needs
The first thing you need to do is be honest about your needs. Take a look at your treatment plan and your day-to-day life. Figure out which parts of your plan have wiggle room and which parts are an absolute necessity. Consult your health journal and records to discern out what your body can handle (long car ride? airplane flight? lots of walking?), and what it can’t.
Plan Your Vacation Around Your Condition
Now that you know what your body needs, now you need to be honest about what you can do. Look at how far you can travel and the activities you’ll enjoy, and make your plans.
Prepare for Your Vacation
Make a list of all the things you’ll need for your trip, and make sure you schedule it between outpatient treatments if necessary. If you take medication for flare-ups, make sure you have enough with you. Get copies of your prescriptions in case you need a refill while you’re away from home.
Listen to Your Body on Vacation
Just like at home, you’ll want to listen to your body on vacation. That may mean slowing down or skipping an activity. Consider making a couple of agendas — one for when you’re feeling spritely and one for when your body needs a rest. Having options can help you feel like you’re still in control even when your body isn’t cooperating with one agenda. Takes notes so you’ll have a better idea of what to expect for your next vacation!
