Let’s face it — chronic illness flare-ups don’t always happen on our schedules. You can do everything “right” to manage your symptoms, but you still may have an unexpected flare-up from time to time. So how do you handle celebrating when you don’t feel great? Read on for strategies to help you enjoy the holiday, no matter what your chronic illness throws at you.
Celebration Tip #1: Make the Event a Team Effort
You know the saying: expect the worst & plan for the best. If you’re hosting an event, don’t carry it all on your shoulders. Enlist a team of helpers so that you can a) avoid stress that might induce a flare-up, and b) make sure the event goes off without a hitch even if you need to take it easy for a while.
Celebration Tip #2: Plan for Breaks
You don’t have to be the life of the party every single minute. Plan to take a few breaks throughout the event to recharge in peace, whether that’s sitting down to enjoy a conversation with friends or to retreat to a room by yourself for a bit. Acknowledge your own needs, and make a plan to meet them.
Celebration Tip #3: Bow Out Early If You Need To
Similarly, if you’re attending an event, give yourself permission to head out early if you need to. It doesn’t do anyone any good to stick around when you’re not enjoying yourself. Your host will feel bad that you feel bad, and you’ll feel bad that you’ve made your host feel bad. Know your limits so you can enjoy the party while the party is still enjoyable for you.
Celebration Tip #4: Find Joy in Watching Others Celebrate
Even if you’re not the one running around lighting fireworks this 4th of July, there’s a lot of enjoyment in simply watching others have a blast. Settle down next to a friend or a loved one, snap some photos, and enjoy the merriment without expending a lot of energy. There’s something to be said for relaxing once in a while!
Celebration Tip #5: Don’t Go If You Don’t Want To
If you’re a people pleaser, you may want to guilt yourself into going to an event where you’ll spend the whole night wishing you were somewhere else. This year, give yourself a break. If you want to stay home and binge watch the latest Netflix release, go for it! After all, shouldn’t our celebration of independence include the freedom to do what you want?
