As the kids head back to school this month, it means it’s time for new experiences, new subjects, new teachers and new germs. Read on to find out how you and your family can stay healthy during the school year.
Encourage Hand Washing
Up to 80 percent of illnesses are spread through touch, and the CDC says that hand washing is the single most important factor in stopping the spread of viral and bacterial disease. So encourage your kids to wash their hands before and after every meal, and every time they use the restroom. This simple tactic will go a long way toward keeping your family healthy.
Eat a Healthy Diet (and Supplement with a Multivitamin)
You know the old adage, “You are what you eat.” Well, if you eat healthy, you’re much more likely to stay healthy. Eating a diet filled with vitamins, minerals and nutrients is exactly what your body needs to operate at full capacity. Not only will you get an immune system boost, but you’ll also have more energy and better concentration — definitely good qualities for the classroom and the office.
Discourage Sharing Hygiene Items
While it may go against custom to suggest that your children NOT share, there are certain items that they should keep to themselves to help prevent the spread of disease. Lip balm or gloss or lipstick, mascara and eye shadow and other items that come in contact with the face should not be shared.
Cover Your Mouth
Make sure your children know to cover their mouths when they sneeze. The best way is with a handkerchief, facial tissue or into the crook of one’s elbow. If they catch a cough or a sneeze with their hands, make sure they know to wash their hands immediately afterwards. Doing what they can to help prevent spread of illness — even if they’ve already picked up a bug — can help keep the rest of your family healthy so you can help them get back to feeling 100 percent.
